MCC Ladies Scripture Memory (by Kara Volkman)

The idea of having a group of women memorizing the Word together stemmed from a couple of different places. The first was out of a desire to help my own children to memorize the Bible, and not just isolated verses but whole passages of Scripture. I wanted them to not just memorize, “But God, being rich in mercy…” (Ephesians 2:4). I wanted them to back up and know, “And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked…” (Ephesians 2:1) so that when they got to God, being rich in mercy, they would see it in light of their sin. There’s almost a palpable relief to get to memorize and meditate on Ephesians 2:4-7 after repeating Ephesians 2:1-3 for a whole week! This convicted me, though, because I didn’t have a consistent practice of memorizing Scripture myself. So I thought, “I’ll do it with them!”

In addition, Bekah Parker and I had had several conversations recently about desiring to be in the Word more, challenging ourselves in Bible study, and growing together in biblical literacy as women in the church. So I asked her if she would be willing to do it with me, and she and I began to memorize a passage of Scripture together during the week and reciting it to each other each Sunday.

Both of us began to wonder what it would look like to see if there were other women who would want to join in memorizing with us. We saw the fruit of this hiding Scripture in our hearts, meditating on it throughout the day and week, and holding each other accountable to memorize. What joy to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ together in this way!

So we invited any other women who might want to join with us, following the same pattern of memorizing two to four verses during the week and reciting them to each other on Sunday. And, praise God, we now have 15 women memorizing together (and would love to have any others join us any time)! We’ll spend the next few months memorizing Psalm 130 and Romans 12.
